Bethany Rogers '01

Economist

Anyone meeting Bethany Rogers for the first time, might consider she's the closest thing to a saint they've ever met. With a big smile and a quiet but confident demeanor, Bethany is a devoutly religious individual who has directed her life to helping others, particularly those who are most disadvantaged. After graduating from The Delphian School in Oregon and receiving a Bachelor's degree in Religion from Pepperdine University, Bethany set her sights globally, a rather broad view for a young person. "As a Christian, I have desired to help others both internationally and locally since I was a teenager. In the last few years I've had the opportunity to travel where people really need help and to be of direct service," says Bethany modestly.

She jumped into her humanitarian work with both feet. Arriving in Sri Lanka, literally in the wake of the devastating tsunami, Bethany worked with a Christian non-profit group aiding in relief for destitute children orphaned by the disaster. Then she assisted in Kenya at a camp that houses homeless from the streets of Nairobi. There she taught bible studies, math, English, and trade skills to prepare teenagers to take care of themselves after leaving the camp. All along the way, Bethany made friends and changed lives for the better.

Interested in bringing together her passion to help and her interest in business—in particular, alternative healthcare—Bethany decided to create a company whose proceeds would go to support selected non-profits. She saw a need for an online service related to selecting appropriate herbal products for specific health concerns, and then spent a year creating an Internet-based business entirely on her own—from the business plan, to the construction and design of the website, to the suppliers of the products. Once her enterprise is launched and profitable, Bethany plans to donate to organizations similar to the one that took her to Sri Lanka and Kenya. Meanwhile, she's earning a living writing editor-training curriculum for a southern California company, a position she attributes to her Delphi education. "I would not have the capability to take on such a project without the Delphi courses I completed," she claims, adding, "My professors in college made note of the fact that the style of my papers exceeded those of fellow students."

Bethany says her mantra in business and in life is taken from an article she read while at Delphi. Written by L. Ron Hubbard, the article is called "Professionalism" and she quoted a line from it that she lives by: "Anything you do, do it as a professional to professional standards." It's a level of achievement Bethany has applied to everything she has done since she left Delphi.

Today, Bethany continues to create big waves that ripple out across the globe. "Overall, my goal is to serve individuals and non-profit organizations by contributing my time and resources so they can experience a life of opportunity and go on to share those opportunities with others." We are fortunate to have Bethany as part of the alumni force that is making a difference in the world.
