Business Seminar 2005
Second Stop: Boston
In Boston, the students were hosted by Delphi parents Steve and Cheryl Jonas. On
Sunday, "Ben Franklin" took the group on a tour of the Freedom Trail, followed by
a visit to the Holocaust Memorial. For two days, Steve Jonas, a top Fidelity Investments
executive, opened the doors of Fidelity to the students. They met directly with
professionals and executives, learning what their jobs are and what each does to
deliver a valuable product or service for Fidelity. Students were surprised to learn
that Fidelity employs 35,000 people, and owns and operates the Seaport Hotel and
many other businesses. After a tour of the hotel, from the laundry room and kitchens
to the executive suite, students saw the importance Fidelity placed on diversification.
As Corrienne Copper said, "There are so many parts to Fidelity I didn't realize
existed. Fidelity doesn't just preach diversification, they do it."
The students met Jurrien Timmer, Senior Market Analyst, who showed the students
the Chartroom, an enormous room with display walls covered with charts and graphs
of stocks, indexes, bonds and funds, and other information. He helps Fidelity discover
patterns and develop strategies based on information gleaned from these walls. One
huge graph near the entrance of the Chartroom graphed the Dow Jones Industrial Index
from its inception more than a hundred years ago.
At the Fidelity Center for Applied Technology, students participated in web-site
usability tests, which Fidelity uses to ensure each pixel is well placed, and no
space is wasted. Remarking on Fidelity's consistent attention to detail, one student
said, "The small things you do can become the big things that set you apart from
others and make you shine!"
