Business Seminar 2005
Last Stop: New York
In New York, students went into the New York Stock Exchange and in small groups
traders led them onto the active trading floor of the stock exchange. This once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity is rarely offered to highly placed executives, much less high school
students, and the students were very grateful. During their tour, there was a big
commotion because of the news that two companies were merging, and students saw
how the latest news was affecting the prices of the stock of both companies. In
the words of one student, "Even though I read about stock trading, I got a much
better understanding by being able to go and see it as it was happening."
There were other visits to a wide range of businesses. Students visited Hinton Battle,
a dancer, singer, choreographer, and producer (the only living three-time Tony Award
winner) at his Theatre Laboratory, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping
young potential performing artists. To demonstrate the reality of supply and demand
of actors and actresses, Hinton brought out an enormous stack of photos and resumes,
at least two feet thick, which he said was just a portion of what he receives each
week. Students saw that this was a very competitive field, with thousands of people
coming to New York each year to live their dream of performing.
Students visited the Cotton Exchange, where they spent time on the trading floor
while it was in full operation. Students visited Chris Isham, Chief Investigative
Reporter for ABC News, and the law offices where Delphi parent Devora Lindeman works.
Delphi parent Raven Kane arranged for the students to meet with a Broadway producer
and the lead actor and writer of a very successful off-Broadway show.
The students visited the site of the World Trade Center, and St. Paul's Chapel,
which served as a refuge and center of operations for 9/11 recovery efforts. They
visited a private investment bank, and a high tech venture capital company, attended
Broadway shows and ate at the Delegate's Dining Room in the United Nations.
