Business Seminar 2003
Second Stop: Boston
They traveled to Boston Saturday night and stayed at the Omni Parker House, America's
longest continually-operating hotel. Sunday morning Ben Franklin (historian Bill
Meikle in the persona of Franklin) gave them a personalized tour of the Freedom
Trail. Students gained a unique perspective on the work of our Founding Fathers,
the birth of the United States of America and the freedoms we hold so dear. One
student reflected the views of all the students when he said, "The Freedom Trail
tour by Ben Franklin brought the sights and sounds and a new reality and understanding
to the early American history I've been reading and studying about for many years."
Students dined at the Union Oyster House, the oldest restaurant in continual service
in the United States, and then attended a performance by Blue Man Group.
In Boston, they were hosted by Steve and Cheryl Jonas, parents of Delphi graduates
Zack and Emily Jonas. Steve is the Chief Administrative Officer of Fidelity Investments.
Fidelity is one of the largest, most diversified and successful investment management
organizations in the world, with over 29,000 employees and more than 15 million
investors, who entrust Fidelity with over $1 trillion in assets. Steve arranged
for students to visit many areas of the large Fidelity organization on Monday and
Tuesday, where they got to hear directly from executives and professionals and see
Fidelity's different operations.
At Fidelity, students not only learned about investment and financial services,
but also how large organizations operate, including their many support operations.
The students experienced the diversity of Fidelity enterprises, including its hotel,
convention center and transportation companies. Students learned about Fidelity's
philosophy and its core values, and saw them reflected in their tours and visits;
throughout the company they experienced the professionalism they had studied in
the classroom.
Monday night they visited Harvard Square, and Tuesday afternoon they visited the
Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, before taking the train to New York.
