Business Seminar 2003
The United Nations
Friday morning began with a visit to ABC's Good Morning America show, where
our students in the studio could be seen holding Delphi signs on TV behind weatherman
Tony Perkins, during a cooking segment with Emeril Lagasse and a musical performance
by country music star Mark Wills.
After visiting more high-rise businesses on Friday, the students ate in the United
Nations Delegates Dining Room before their tour of the UN. They enjoyed a gourmet
buffet in the company of international diplomats, while enjoying spectacular views
of the UN Grounds, Manhattan and the East River, and students met delegates and
visitors from around the world. They discovered that the UN Security Council was
eating in an adjacent dining room, after having just met to discuss the Iraq situation
and to hear the report of UN Weapons Inspector Hans Blix. The students begged to
be allowed to postpone their tour and wait for a glimpse of the Security Council
members when they walked out of their dining room.
After almost an hour's wait, the students saw the entire Security Council as members
and their staff slowly made their way out of their dining room. When US Secretary
of State Colin Powell walked by, the students clapped, and he stopped to say hello.
A few minutes later, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan came by. He stopped and shook
hands with Headmistress Rosemary Didear and Seminar Instructor Mark Siegel. He spoke
to the students about their interest in current events and following the work of
the United Nations, and he encouraged them to use their studies to help make the
world a better place. The students were overjoyed at the unique experience. As Form
6 student Ryan Alabaster said, "I'll never forget it—never!"
