Commencement 2007
Eduardo Olmos [See the
video of his speech.]
A student at Delphi in the early 1980's, Mr. Olmos went on to receive his Bachelor's
Degree in Business Administration from Portland State University and then returned
to his home in Mexico, where he began his career in politics. He has served as a
member of the Mexican Congress, as the Coahuila State Secretary for Public Works
and Transportation, and currently as the State Secretary for Regional Development.
Now a proud Delphi parent, Mr. Olmos had been to Delphi on two previous occasions
to address the student body, imparting messages about the importance of integrity
in politics. In his Commencement address, he spoke about public service and helping
those who were less privileged.
"When your leadership is honest and concerned about the rest of society," Mr. Olmos
said, "you realize that your main responsibility is toward the weaker and the under-privileged.
Because when you wage war against misery and ignorance, you secure a safer place
for everyone around you."

"Before I came to Delphi, I was not a leader, and I looked to my peers for answers
and trends. I was generally an ethical kid, but I did not enforce others to be ethical.
I thought I was a leader, but I later found out that I didn't even know what the
word meant. I thought I was happy, and I was, but it was nowhere near to the happiness
I had (and still have) from going through the program.
"Now, whenever I think about Delphi, I miss all the fun that came with it: the sports,
the staff, the senior class, the friends, the projects, Student Council, running
to make targets—the list goes on and on. Of course, I also had some difficult times,
but I always came through them a better and stronger person.
"Delphi is the place where magic happens."

"Before coming to Delphi, I had no purpose for what I was doing in life. I would
just go along and do my best with what was given to me. The problem was I would
never actually take charge.
"Through Delphi's program and by doing countless projects, I have become an individual
who can make things happen. I now have a purpose for what I do, and I know specifically
what I want to achieve and how to achieve it.
"Anyone who has attended Delphi knows the program is unique. The literature program
was particularly amazing and gave me some extremely valuable and applicable tools
for life.
"Delphi has helped me become a better person. But more importantly, I had a great
time doing it! I'd like to thank all the staff for making this possible."
