United States Department of Education Consultants Visit Delphi
Last April, Delphi was privileged to have a group of distinguished educational consultants
from the United States Department of Education visit our Boston campus. The members
of the team were: Dr. Dwight Allen, Dr. Margaret Labot, Dr. Jim Tanner and Dr. Vennetta
Whitaker.
The team of inspectors were amazed with what they saw. In their reports they made
the following comments organized in four categories:
"Strong Methodology"
"The love of learning and instilling the children's sense of 'learning how to learn
for a lifetime' is a key strength of the program and evident in the students' attitudes
towards their work."
"Students feel empowered and are enthusiastic about their studies, which should
perpetuate positive learning attitudes throughout life. Students at the school are
enthusiastic in their response to questions about their activities, showing an internalization
of self-esteem and a passion towards learning."
"A commendable classroom culture exists between students as well as comfortable
student-supervisor relationships. The team was considerably impressed by the students'
individual focus."
"The Ethics Program"
"The team is very supportive and impressed by the level of ethics both in the curriculum,
but even more so as evidenced by classroom behavior of both teachers and students.
Learning which imparts knowledge in a way to achieve goals and apply learning in
life is a commendable element of the program."
"Staff Development"
"In many learning programs staff development is not as practically applied or as
proficient as seen at the Delphi school. The hands-on appropriate framework and
commendable, applicable staff development made a significant impact on the team.
Using the term 'supervisors' for the upper level of teaching staff, instead of teachers,
cues that they have a different role than just lecturing to students. It is a powerful
symbol of the self-paced learning system and indicates the facilitator role of teachers
in the instruction delivery system."
"In Summary and Conclusion"
"The 'learning how to learn' style of Hubbard's
methodology is an extremely powerful tool for students. Self-paced learning and
the incredibly positive and disciplined classroom environments are star aspects
of the program. The visitation team was impressed by the level of learning in the
Delphi school and excited about the dedication of the students and teachers in the
learning process."
