Last week Delphian School students participating in the local Youth for Human Rights Club attended an event honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The program included the dedication of an inter-religious Peace Pole and featured choral singing and multi-cultural dancers in celebration of unity and peace. The program also presented awards to Human Rights poster and poetry contest winners.

The Delphian Youth for Human Rights Club President, Jett Lahde, led participating students in promoting education on Human Rights for all students in order to carry on Dr. King’s dream for social justice and civil rights.

Youth For Human Rights is an international organization devoted to raising awarness of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1948.

Although the Declaration, which comprises a broad range of rights, is not a legally binding document, it has inspired more than 60 human rights instruments which together constitute an international standard of human rights. These instruments include the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, both of which are legally binding treaties. Together with the Universal Declaration, they constitute the International Bill of Rights.

At the reception following the award program, the Delphian YHR members promoted a petition for Human Rights that guest were invited to sign. They got over 60 signatures added to the petition.
